Chinese New Year 2019: the year of the piglet!

Chinese New Year is the promise to take your eyes full with grandiose parades. All of Paris comes alive and imaginative to amaze Parisians and tourists alike. Discover the must-attend Chinese New Year events in Paris from January 21 to February 20, 2019!

The origins of the Chinese New Year

Chinese New Year is a time to celebrate the winter solstice and the arrival of spring for a month. According to a Chinese legend, the Emperor of Jade invited many animal species for his New Year. However, only twelve animals were present. The Emperor decided to thank them by awarding them each a year. From February 5, 2019 to January 24, 2020, we will be in the year of the piglet.

Events not to be missed for the Chinese New Year

To celebrate the Chinese New Year with great pomp and ceremony, meet in the 13th arrondissement of Paris on Sunday 17 February 2019 at 1.30 pm. A colourful parade of dragons will wander the streets of the neighbourhood. You can also discover exhibitions, conferences and shows from February 4 to 17.

Place de la République awaits you a little earlier: on February 10, 2019 for a parade through the 3rd and 4th arrondissements of the capital. For its part, the 3rd arrondissement invites you to participate in a plethora of colourful cultural events from February 4 to 10, 2019. On the program: exhibitions, workshops & conferences, music & dance. The Musée Guimet will enter the new lunar year from February 8 to 10 with participatory workshops and storytelling visits to its galleries.

The gourmands will stop by the Food Market on February 7, in partnership with the Zhao Tavern to awaken their taste buds to Chinese cuisine. Finally, the Chinese troupe of Shen Yun dancers will delight spectators from January 16 to May 12, 2019 at the Palais des Congrès.
